Samba/LMC (Loss of Motor Control) = (usually used in freediving) after breath holding, due to a lack of oxygen in the brain, the first stage of an impending blackout is a reaction where the arms and legs start to convulse, giving the appearance that the freediver is dancing the samba.

Scuba mask

Mask = a piece of equipment covering the eyes and nose and trapping air inside, creating a pocket which allows the eyes to focus the light so one can see under water. Read the rest of this entry »

Barotrauma = accident specific to diving caused by a sudden change in the pressure between the body cavities and the external environment

Skin diving/freediving

Skin diving/freediving = the sport of swimming under water with a face mask and flippers and especially without a portable breathing device (Merriam-Webster Dictionary).


SCUBA = self-contained underwater breathing apparatus, acronym: SCUBA; an apparatus utilizing a portable supply of compressed gas (as air) supplied at a regulated pressure and used for breathing while swimming underwater (Merriam-Webster Dictionary).


Apnea = temporary interruption of breathing, deliberate in the case of freediving.

Altitude diving

Altitude diving = diving at greater heights than sea level (for example: mountainous lake); requires the use of special dive tables or computer procedures for the safety stops, compared with diving at sea level.


NAUI = National Association of Underwater Instructors; one of the biggest certifying international organization in scuba diving.


PADI = Professional Association of Diving Instructors; the largest recreational diving membership and diver training organization.
